City of DeKalb seeks residents for Landmark Commission

The City of DeKalb seeks residents interested in helping preserve the City’s heritage and built environment to serve as members of the City Landmark Commission.

In 1977 the City of DeKalb created the Landmark Commission and tasked this volunteer group of citizens with a variety of duties and powers involving historic preservation. Their work includes conducting surveys of historic districts and buildings, designating local landmarks, acting as resource consultants for owners of historic properties, and working for the continuing education of the citizens of DeKalb with respect to the historic and architectural heritage of the City.

The City seeks new members for the Commission. Applicants will live in DeKalb and have interest in history, architecture, maintaining the City’s distinct “sense of place,” and be willing to work to further historic preservation efforts. Beyond preserving community heritage and creating a unique sense of place, historic preservation can provide actual tax benefits and incentives to owners of historic properties.
