The DeKalb (HRC) will host a community discussion about the First Amendment and other topics on Tuesday, April 5. The purpose of this discussion is to provide the community with another opportunity to discuss the ideas presented at Northern Illinois University’s March 23 Diversity Dialogue panel, “The First Amendment: Right to Free Speech and the Right to Peacefully Assemble.” The HRC co-sponsored the Diversity Dialogue event.
“The HRC believes that through community discussions on topics like our First Amendment freedoms, our community will better define itself as one that includes all and supports everyone’s rights to free speech and assembly,” said Larry Apperson, Chairman of the HRC.
The HRC is inviting community members to attend its regularly scheduled April 5 meeting in the Bilder Room of the DeKalb Public Library starting at 6:30 p.m. The first part of the agenda will include a public participation discussion period for community members on the topic of the right to free speech and peaceful assembly.
The HRC became involved in discussions on the First Amendment and Americans’ right to peaceably assemble after a referral from the DeKalb City Council to discuss two proposed ordinances. Although the proposed ordinances have since been withdrawn, the HRC will continue the public discussion.
To assist community members who were not able to attend the NIU March 23 Diversity Dialogue Meeting on First Amendment freedoms, a video of this panel discussion is available at: www.youtube.com/user/NorthernIllUniv/videos.
The HRC is an advisory commission to the City of DeKalb and has a mission to “foster a community that respects and supports the diversity and dignity of all people and promotes building strong relationships between its diverse citizens, groups and organizations.”
