State Senator Christine J. Johnson (R-Shabbona) began her first term in the Illinois General Assembly on Monday to represent the 35th senate district.
“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity and honor of representing the thirty-fifth district,” Sen. Johnson said after being sworn in. “This is an opportunity to be a voice for financial reform in Springfield and help be a part of steering Illinois back on track.”
Sen. Johnson took the oath of office administered by Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) during a swearing-in ceremony at 4 p.m. in the Senate chambers.
Previously, Sen. Johnson served as the Treasurer of DeKalb County, a position she has held since 1994.
“While there are many issues I’m ready to help resolve in Springfield, the Illinois budget and fiscal problems are a priority for me,” Sen. Johnson said. “Residents not just in DeKalb County and northern Illinois, but also across the state, have felt the harsh effects of the state’s finances. We need to work toward solutions — and quickly.”
Sen. Johnson replaces former State Senator Brad Burzynski, who served in the legislature for two decades and announced his retirement last month. Sen. Johnson will serve out the remaining two years of Sen. Burzynski’s term.
“Sen. Burzynski worked hard for the constituents of the thirty-fifth and I pledge to follow his example by listening to what the people want,” Sen. Johnson said. “I encourage all my constituents to contact me and let me help them make their voices heard in the senate chambers in Springfield. Together we can help Illinois move forward in the right direction.”
The 35th district is comprised of Belvidere, Caledonia, Capron, Cherry Valley, Clare, Cortland, Creston, Davis Junction, DeKalb, Earlville, Genoa, Hillcrest Village, Hinckley, Kingston, Kirkland, Lee, Leland, Lindenwood, Loves Park, Malta, Maple Park, Monroe Center, Poplar Grove, Rochelle, Rockford, Roscoe, Sandwich, Shabbona, Somonauk, South Beloit, Stillman Valley, Sycamore, Timberlane and Waterman.
