The DeKalb Park District is hosting its 9th Annual Polarpalooza Winter Festival on Saturday, February 1, from noon to 3:00 p.m., at Hopkins Park Shelter, located at 1403 Sycamore Road.
Festive fun for the entire family, snow or shine, will be available at this free, family-oriented event, which includes indoor and outdoor activities to help you beat the winter blues this February.
Festival attendees will enjoy free hot chocolate and s’mores while warming up next to one of the community fires, hopping aboard a hayride through Hopkins Park, making bird feeders, or watching a sled dog demonstration courtesy of Free Spirit Siberian Rescue. Other outdoor winter-themed activities include sledding (weather-pending), snowman bowling, snowman bean bag toss, “ice” fishing, and a “snow” shoveling competition. Festival sponsor Rock Valley Credit Union will even have a free hot chocolate toppings bar available while supplies last at their booth!
Indoors at Hopkins Park Shelter, there will be crafts with Opportunity House and activities with the Kishwaukee Special Recreation Association and DeKalb County Basics. Sweet Butts Cotton Candy will be at the festival, sharing free bags of their delicious spun sugar treats. While you chill out at the event, you can meet and take a photo with the Park District’s mascot, Ronnie the River Otter! Staff cannot wait to see everyone at the coolest event of the season.
“We are thrilled to celebrate the 9th Annual Polarpalooza, a cherished tradition that brings our community together to celebrate winter fun and adventure,” commented Recreation Supervisor Emily Kvasnicka. “This event showcases the vibrant spirit of DeKalb and offers something for everyone to enjoy, from hot chocolate to crafts, hayrides, sled dogs, and more; we look forward to another memorable year of polar excitement!”
Interested in volunteering at this year’s festival? Visit our website and fill out a Volunteer Interest Form to learn more about how you can help at this annual winter tradition. Due to the Hopkins Pool Renovation Project and demolition, the seasonal ice rink will be closed this winter, so ice skating will not be offered at Polarpalooza this year.
