(DeKalb) – As new immigrants to the US from Puerto Rico, Christmas feels very cold and different to Hildamar and Santiago. They especially miss a favorite holiday, Three Kings Day. Luckily, the New York Public Library has a children’s librarian that wants to help! She shows Hildamar and Santiago that the library is for everyone, whether you speak Spanish or English.
The Storyteller’s Candle is the DeKalb Public Library’s Bookworm Barbs book for December. Bookworm Barbs is our book club for students going into K-2. We read shorter chapter books with lots of pictures. Older first and second grade students may be able to read on their own, but the books also make a nice family read aloud, too.
This month’s book is special for a couple of reasons. It is bilingual, so you can read it in English or Spanish. Also, it’s a bonus story for our year-long 2026 celebration, America 250. 2026 is the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, so throughout 2026 we’ll occasionally have book selections that honor the rich history of our country.
Bookworm Barbs will meet on Thursday, December 18, at 4:00 p.m.
Is your child a little bit older and looking for a book club? Check out our BARB (Books Are Really Brilliant) Book Club for students in grades 3-5.
Mac B. is an ordinary kid who gets a call from the Queen of England. Her crown jewels have been stolen! Of course, she wants Mac B. to find them for her. He’ll brave the KGB, twelve corgis, night-vision sunglasses, and too many people who know karate—all while working on his handwriting and trying to get a new high score on his Game Boy.
Mac B. Kid Spy is our BARB Book Club book this month. BARB (Books Are Really Brilliant) book club is for students in grades 3-5. At our meeting, we talk about the book, but that’s not all! We’ll also play a game and eat a fun snack inspired by the book.
BARB Book Club will meet on Thursday, December 18, at 5:00 p.m.
Pick up a copy of either book at the Children’s Department Desk while supplies last. Please register at dkpl.org for either book club, as space is limited. Book clubs will meet in the Story & Activity Room.
