Perfect time to create your own Bastille Day party. Bastille Day is a holiday celebrating the storming of the Bastille—a military fortress and prison—on July 14, 1789, in a violent uprising that helped usher in the French Revolution. Besides holding gunpowder and other supplies valuable to revolutionaries, the Bastille also symbolized the callous tyranny of the French monarchy, especially King Louis XVI and his queen, Marie Antoinette.
Bastille Day is the common name given in English-speaking countries to the national day of France, which is celebrated on 14 July each year. In French, it is formally called ‘Fête Nationale’. As a prison, it held political dissidents (such as the writer and philosopher Voltaire), many of whom were locked away without a trial by order of the king.
The French National Day is the anniversary and a turning point of the French Revolution, as well as the Fête de la Fédération which celebrated the unity of the French people on 14 July 1790. Celebrations are held throughout France, one that has been reported as “the oldest and largest military parade in Europe”.
Create your own Bastille Day party. If you still have your red white and blue decorations leftover from the 4th of July, why not throw your own Bastille Day event with classically French recipes? Some traditional French dishes that are perfect for sharing, like Bouillabaisse, French Bread, French Toast, Ratatouille, Creme Brûlée, French Flag Cake and so much more.
