Bringing together comprehensive cancer services in one building and improving the treatment experience for patients, The Cancer Center is a highly anticipated improvement in Kishwaukee Community Hospital’s oncology services. The Cancer Center features medical oncology; radiation therapy; infusion therapy; hematology; laboratory; resource center; complementary medicine like massage therapy; education and conference rooms equipped with technology for patient care teleconferencing with Loyola University Health System; chemotherapy treatment bays, each with a television; and a boutique for wigs and prostheses. Through its affiliation with Loyola, The Cancer Center is now making clinical trials available locally for patients.
The Cancer Center features the following technology:
* A positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scanner to help physicians pinpoint areas of abnormal metabolic activity, by gathering two types of data in one convenient test.
* Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) may increase the chances of destroying tumors while eliminating or decreasing the side effects of exposure to surrounding tissues.
* Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) provides focused radiation therapy that can be adjusted to match the current location of the tumor for improved accuracy.
