Corn Fest headlines an extremely busy upcoming weekend throughout DeKalb County, beginning Friday, August 24 through Sunday, August 26, 2018. Other noteworthy events going on this weekend include Ribs, Rhythm and Brews Fest in Sycamore, Genoa Pioneer Day, NIU student move in and Welcome Days, Sandwich Summer Days, and the Kickoff Classic at Huskie Stadium.
Corn Fest (DeKalb) – Friday, Saturday, Sunday
The 41st annual Corn Fest will be held in Downtown DeKalb, featuring Carnival Rides, Sound Stage and Community Stage entertainment , Historical Bus Tours, a Free Corn Boil and MUCH MORE. Sound Stage performers include Beatles, Eagles, Tom Petty, and Eric Clapton Tribute Bands, along with popular cover bands 7th Heaven, Hi Infidelity and others. Ribs, Rhythm and Brews Fest (Sycamore) – Saturday
Sycamore’s Ribs, Rhythm & Brews Fest is returning bigger and better in 2018! More ribs, beer and music! The Fest will be held August 25 from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m. in Downtown Sycamore on Elm Street and City Lot 1 & 2. RR&B Fest consists of award-winning rib vendors from across the region, craft beer, and crowd-pleasing musical entertainment from headliner, Back Country Roads with opening acts Mr. Myers Band, and DJ Toxic from Behind the Beats. Craft Brews will have a local flavor with an Irish Red Ale and an American Lager from The Forge of Sycamore, along with other brewers’ selections. Vendors competing for the chefs title include Country Store & Catering, Slow Smoke BBQ, Sycamore Tom & Jerry’s and last year’s champion, Hicks BBQ.
Pioneer Day (Genoa) – Sunday
The Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society Museum invites you to attend their 33rd Annual Pioneer Day in Genoa. This event, appropriate for families or individuals interested in engaging with historical context, handcrafts, and traditions of our community, will include outdoor exhibitors, tours of the museum, live music, a pork chop dinner sponsored by the Genoa Lions Club, and slices of homemade pie for sale. The event will take place on Sunday, August 26, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at 622 Park Avenue in Genoa (grounds of the 1886 depot). Admission is free.
NIU Welcome Days – Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Look for increased traffic and activity around DeKalb as NIU students move in to their residence halls this weekend to begin another academic year. NIU will be hosting a number of events to welcome students back to campus. Check out the NIU Welcome Days website (https://niu.edu/welcomedays/) for a schedule of events.
Sandwich Summer Days – Saturday
The fourth Sandwich Summer Days outdoor street festival, sponsored by Olde Tyme Inn will take place on Saturday, August 25 from 1:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Main street will be closed down between Rt. 34 and Railroad St. for the event.

Kickoff Classic at Huskie Stadium – Saturday
Huskie Stadium on the campus of Northern Illinois University will host three exciting high school football games for the Kickoff Classic on Saturday, August 25. Most noteworthy is the return of former NIU superstar quarterback, Jordan Lynch, as he will coach his first game for Mt. Carmel High School, where he took over at his Alma mater for retired legendary coach, Frank Lenti. You can purchase tickets in advance through Ticketmaster or at the stadium on the day of the game. General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors.
Game Schedule:
12 p.m.: Mount Carmel vs. Hope Academy
3 p.m.: Benet vs. St. Laurence
6 p.m.: Lockport vs. Providence
