The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) continues to mill the road surface
overnight and progress south on IL 23. The milling is scheduled to continue through the
end of the month with paving to begin after the Labor Day Holiday. Intermittent, daytime
lane closures in the northbound lanes will continue as the contractor pours the last of
the curbs and sidewalks.
Construction on the Kishwaukee – Kiwanis Bike Path kicked off last Tuesday. The
contractor began to clear out trees between Lincoln Hwy and the railroad tracks. Upon
completion, the contractor will haul out excess soil to begin the grading process.
The Kishwaukee Bike Path Project links Prairie Park on the south side of Lincoln
Highway to the Northern Illinois University (NIU) campus on the north side of Lincoln
Highway. This provides an off street bike path from Devonaire Farms Subdivision to the
Hopkins Park Pool and then links to the DeKalb Nature Trail. The City received 80% of
the funding from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP). In 2011, the
DeKalb Sycamore Area Transportation Study (DSATS) published a Bicycle and
Pedestrian Plan. The plan identified the proposed the bike path as critical and
necessary to connect NIU to the City’s bike paths. DeKalb’s ITEP grant award is among
54 statewide projects funding bike paths and streetscapes.
The water main replacement project on Sunset Place between Fourth Street and First
Street continues. Crews continue digging west to First Street. Once digging is complete, the contractor inserts the new water main and backfills the trench with stone gravel. They will repeat the process on the other scheduled water main replacements. After all mains are inserted, the contractor returns to tie into the live water mains. However, before going live, Public Works tests the main for microbial contaminations and performs a pressure test. A satisfactory result from both tests permits the main to go live permanently.
The 2017 Street maintenance program has moved to the milling phase. This week, the
contractor milled Normal Road, Taylor Street, and Pine Street. The remaining streets scheduled for milling are listed below.
- North 11th Street, Lincoln Highway to Locust Street
- North 10th Street, railroad tracks to Pleasant Street.
- North 9th Street, Lincoln Highway to Locust Stree
During construction, you may experience parking restrictions, limited traffic, and limited
driveway access. The contractor will work hard to limit inconveniences, but the City asks for your patience as the work occurs.

Karen Lichtman more bike paths!
Cool, that will be a good connection! I wish there was a map with the story!
Karen Lichtman We haven’t been able to see a map yet but would love to! You can see in this pic how it will connect the path directly across from the NIU East Lagoon, along the river (trees are cut down) and over to the park but we still can’t figure out if they are going over or under the RR tracks (assume it must be under but doesn’t seem room). We’d love to hear more from anyone that knows!
Karen Lichtman I thought the same thing. Oh well will just have to bust our google to figure out where the paths will be.
We reached out to the City and they promise us a map coming soon 🙂
Under Lincoln Highway and under the railway. You can make out the route of the path on any up to date satellite imagery, the rough clearing was done several years ago before being stalled by the State’s budget impasse.
Finally!
