West Side Story & More! A fun high energy dance show featuring award winning dances will be presented by the Beth Fowler Dance Company and School of Dance this coming weekend at the historic Egyptian Theatre, 135 North Second Street, in downtown DeKalb. Performances will be Friday, June 3 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, June 4 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, June 5 at 2:00 p.m.
Artistic Director Beth Fowler said “we opened up this free opportunity to all community boys from ages 4-24 to be in our production of “West Side Story.” We had an amazing response and will feature 42 boys in this production. You just can’t do this production right without boys. There is nothing more energetic than 42 boys hitting the stage. We will offer this same free opportunity to the boys next year for our June 2017 production of “Grease.”
“West Side Story,” a 1950’s version of “Romeo and Juliet,” will be presented featuring music from the soundtrack from the movie starring Natalie Wood. The story is told with a backdrop of New York Street scenes depicting the opposing forces of two street gangs, the American Jet and the Puerto Rican Sharks. The conflicts and rivalry of the gangs are complicated when Maria, sister of Shark leader, Bernardo, meets Tony, leader of the Jets. They fall in love, with tragic results.
Artistic Director Beth Fowler collaborated with teacher/choreographers Kelly Bolander, Hannah Bohn, Brooke Fowler and Tamera Newquist to present dynamic choreography, very representative of the original style shown in the movie version. The roles of Maria and Tony will be dance by company member Anna Nolazco of West Chicago, and guest artist Stephan Blood from NIU. Featured as Bernardo will be Eddy Garcia of Sycamore and company member Lindsey Haugen of St. Charles will perform as Bernardo’s girlfriend, Anita.
Also featured in this production will be award winning dances by the Beth Fowler School of Dance Competitive Teams. A variety of high energy jazz, hip hop, lyrical, tap, and creative dance pieces will also be presented.
Discounted early bird tickets are available through May, and cost $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and younger. Starting June 1, tickets will cost $22 for adults and $17 for children. Tickets are available at www.egyptiantheatre.org, or by calling (815) 758-1225. Tickets will also be available at the theatre office box one hour before each performance.
