On the day after Northern Illinois University remembered five students who were gunned down on its campus eleven years ago, another senseless act of violence struck the community.
According to a release by NIU President, Lisa Freeman, one of the victims of Friday’s shooting at Henry Pratt Company in Aurora, IL was a current NIU student and another was a 2014 graduate.
Following is the text of Dr. Freeman’s message:
“It is with deep sadness that I write today to share that NIU student Trevor Wehner and alumnus Clay Parks were killed yesterday afternoon in the workplace shooting at Henry Pratt Co. in Aurora, IL. Trevor was from Sheridan, IL, and expected to graduate in May with a degree in Human Resource Management. Friday was his first day as an intern at Henry Pratt. Clay was a 2014 graduate of the College of Business and worked as a human resources manager.
“Loss like this is devastating and senseless. I ask our university community to please keep the Wehner and Parks families, friends and communities in your hearts and offer them caring thoughts.
“It’s important that we also support one another during this time of grief and sadness. Please know that there are a variety of resources available to you. Students seeking support can contact Counseling and Consultation Services 24-hours a day at (815) 753-1206.
“Our Division of Students Affairs staff is also available to provide assistance and support services. For faculty and staff, NIU offers support though our Employee Assistance Program.
“NIU will provide an update with memorial information once available. Please do not hesitate to reach out for support or assistance if you need it.”
Together Forward,
Dr. Lisa Freeman

This is why I’m not going to fight my daughter to go to college any more this also why the enrollment here is low also.ð
This recent event did not occur on a college campus. Overall, college campuses are pretty safe places.

Heartbreaking ! Gun Laws did not help with this fella, mentally unstable people and criminals do not follow the law.
Pam Whitson he was able to purchase a gun even though he was a felon, it wasnât until he applied for a cc that he was flagged. Had we had mandatory background checks he wouldnât have been able to buy that gun. Thatâs not to say he wouldnât have been able to get a gun somewhere else but it wouldâve at least been an obstacle. People run stop signs, but in the majority of cases they work because itâs the law. Sadly, the right canât comprehend what comprehensible gun control is, they think it means theyâre coming for their guns. ð¤¦ââï¸
Lori Viereckl we already do background checks in Illinois if youâre obtaining a gun legally, thatâs why we have the FOID card.
Lori Viereckl No. Check out this fella’s history, his foid card had been revoked . . .he has had a criminal history.
Lori Viereckl do your research before spewing false narrative
David Clark he bought a gun in 2014 AS A FELON donât tell me to research when you obviously donât
Chad Simpson he served time in Mississippi in 2008 and was still able to buy a gun in Illinois in 2014
Lori Viereckl You are correct on his history, I am sure there is more. He did receive a letter too, asking him to turn in any guns he might have Due Diligence was a problem with follow up. Between his state of mind, job lose, turn in his guns letter, helped send him over the edge of rational thinking. More laws would not have stopped this. A very sad, heartbreaking story.
Pam Whitson Maybe not more laws, but enforcement of the law would have helped. Instead of a âturn in your gunsâ request. The police should just have confiscated them.
Prayers for the families. ðð»ð
