The long-standing summertime events of the Art Fair and Ice Cream Social have been combined into one day of activities on this Sunday, August 4, 2013 at the Ellwood House Museum and Park. The show hours are from 10 am to 5 pm.

Forty artists from Illinois and around the Midwest will exhibit their original work in booths arrayed on the beautiful grounds of Ellwood Park. Included are paintings, prints, sculpture and photography, as well as a great variety of handcrafted jewelry, ceramics, fiber arts, metalwork, and other fine crafts. Many of your favorite artists are returning this year including Nadine King jewelry, Dorothea Bilder prints, and Tamara Shriver watercolors. These artists and other repeat artists will anchor the show. Several new artists have also joined the circuit this year. The featured artist is Lydia Culik-Puddicombe, who graduated from Northern Illinois University with her B.F.A. in metals and jewelry. Her work is described as wearable folk tales and mixed media jewelry.
Well-known folk/rock duo Patchouli will entertain throughout the day starting at 10:00 AM with their mellow blend of acoustic guitar and voice performed near the front of Ellwood House. Then, the DeKalb Municipal Band takes over at 2:30 pm with their annual concert on the Ellwood House terrace.
First floor tours of the elegant Ellwood mansion will be offered between 10 am and 3:30 pm. The admission cost for tours is $5.00. Tours will begin in the Visitor Center.
A youth activity area on the lawn will feature the arts and movement. Kids will decorate their own kite and play in a special flying area. There will also be an activity to engage the little ones. Using their tactile sense children will roll, squish, and build with clay using their hands and a variety of unique household items. During the band concert kids will connect art, music, and movement by painting during the musical performance. From fast brush strokes, staccato beats, and slow movements, kids will pair their actions with the music that they hear. They will learn that art is not just a sit down activity, but one that can be connected to exercise and movement. The youth educational area is sponsored by Kishwaukee Health System.
The DeKalb Area Garden Club will present a variety of garden vignettes in the Visitor Center, with members present to share information and to answer your gardening questions. Exhibits will include gardening with native plants, tropicals, vegetable gardening and more.
This year’s Art Fair and Ice Cream Social presents a wonderful opportunity to find a special piece of art, a one-of-a-kind gift, or to enjoy music, food and other activities in Ellwood Park.
