Dear Township Residents:
Please accept my sincere apologies for the condition of the landscaping in Oakwood and Evergreen Cemeteries over Memorial Day weekend.
At DeKalb Township we take pride in the fact that we have been making improvements to both Oakwood and Evergreen Cemeteries over the last few years and I am appalled at their appearances on a day designed to honor fallen heroes. Unfortunately, we did not meet your—or our own—expectations.
Upon thorough review of the situation, I discovered the owner of the company which cares for the cemetery grounds experienced the death of a close family member. Between the death and the wet weather he had fallen behind and it resulted in poor cemetery maintenance. While this does not excuse us from our responsibility to the people of this community, know we have taken steps to ensure that this will never happen again.
I am proud that we have veterans from the War of 1812, Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam buried in our cemeteries. We will continue to restore damaged and historic headstones and the township hopes to make our cemeteries some of the most beautiful in the region.
If you have any further questions or comments regarding this matter, please feel free to discuss it with me. The cemeteries are an asset to our community and I apologize again for what happened.
