Providing positive experiences, partnered with positive relationships in positive environments… that is what Positive Youth Development (PYD) is all about. Adventure Works’ PYD programs focus on the 6 C’s of PYD: Confidence, Competence, Compassion, Character, Connection, and Contribution. These elements provide youth the building blocks to enrich their lives, develop skills, and cultivate their own leadership abilities.
A proven alternative to traditional counseling, Adventure Works is committed to offering adventure therapy services to at-risk youth in DeKalb County. The primary goal of adventure therapy is teaching the life skills necessary to manage challenges and become self-sufficient, confident, and mentally healthy adults.
Enrollment is now open for the following programs:
Ascend
Ascend is a climbing group for high school students. In Ascend group members work from the ground up – literally. Working in a small group setting, participants will learn technical “top-rope” rock climbing skills while developing a sense of stewardship. The program culminates in an overnight climbing trip to an outdoor climbing crag.
Cost: $150 per client + Hourly group rate (sliding scale)
When: Saturdays at 1 PM.
Duration: 8 Weeks + overnight climbing trip
Balance
Slacklining is akin to tightrope walking, but a slackline moves much more across its axis. Similar to the challenges that youth face while trying to navigate their path through life, slackliners must make constant adjustments to stay on the line. Balance group members will explore the dynamic world of balance, learn about slacklining equipment, and work in teams to become effective slackliners.
Middle school students
Cost: $50 + Hourly group rate (sliding scale)
When: Thursdays 4 – 6 PM
Duration: 14 weeks
Children’s Conservation Corps
Highlighting 11 Forest Preserves in DeKalb County, the Children’s Conservation Corp (CCC) for grade school students will focus on developing a sense of stewardship and adventure through the use of education and service. Each week, the CCC will visit a new forest preserve, learn about its significance, and pick up litter and trash while exploring the area.
Cost: Hourly group rate (sliding scale)
When: Tuesdays 2 – 4 PM
Duration: Year-round in 11 week sessions
